Lien Phai Pagoda

Lien Phai Pagoda is located on Bach Mai street, in Hai Ba Trung district of Hanoi. According to documents filed by the service of Culture and Information in Hanoi, the pagoda belonging to the Linh Chi Sect, was founded by Master Lam Giac Thuong Si in Binh Ngo year, the seventh Bao Thai year of the Le Du Tong dynasty (1726).

Master Lam Giac, also called Trinh Thap, was Tan Quang Vuong's son and Lord Trinh Can's grandson (1682- 1709). He married the fourth daughter of King Le Hy Tong. When he had the ground dug to make a pond at the back of his house, he saw a lotus shoot underground. The Prince Consort thought that he had a fate with Buddhism, so he decided to enter monkhood and later became the first patriarch of the pagoda, named Lien Tong at that time. In the Tu Duc dynasty, the pagoda's name was changed to Lien Phai to honour the royal family's name.
